DIN EN 60334-18 (VDE 0530-18) contains several parts dealing with the different types of functional evaluation and the specific test procedures for insulation systems of rotating electrical machines. DIN EN 60034-18-1 (VDE 0530-18-1) contains the general guidelines for such procedures and qualification rules. The following parts DIN EN 60034-18-21 (VDE 0530-18-21), DIN EN 60034-18-22 (VDE 0530-18-22), DIN EN 60034-18-31 (VDE 0530-18-31), DIN EN 60034-18-33 (VDE 0530-18-33), DIN EN 60034-18-34 (VDE 0530-18-34), DIN EN 60034-18-41 (VDE 0530-18-41) and DIN CLC/TS 60034-18-42 (VDE V 0530-18-42) contain the detailed procedures for the various types of windings. DIN EN 60034-18-21 (VDE 0530-18-21) describes the thermal evaluation and classification for insulation systems with (usually random wound) windings. Generally (like in the new version of other parts of DIN EN 60034-18 (VDE 0530-18)), the specific technical details of the test procedures (for example, number of specimens) and the qualification rules (for example, comparison of statistic confidence intervals to the medium downtimes) from Part 18-1, 1. edition and all new versions of general guidelines from Part 18-1, 2. edition (for example, treatment of minor modifications in the insulation system and the suitability tests for insulation material for confirmation of expected manufacturing quality) have been adopted into this standard. As before, thermal resistance testing is performed cyclically; every cycle contains a thermal ageing sub-cycle which is followed by a diagnostic sub-cycle. The diagnostic sub-cycle has been redefined by dividing it into a conditioning procedure and a diagnostic test. The conditioning procedure contains the mechanical stress and wet storage in this order. The rules for thermal classification on the basis of comparative evaluation of a verification system with a reference system have been fundamentally reformulated (in accordance with Part 18-31, second edition). A total of 4 different types regarding the expected thermal class and the expected operating life of a verification system have been introduced and the associated decision criteria have been given according to the specifications of the new general guidelines of Part 18-1. As a general rule, the verification system is qualified if its confidence intervals of the medium downtimes meet or exceed those of the reference system in the test temperature range. Insulation systems of various expected heat classes with equal or different expected operating life can be compared so that economically advantageous decisions can be made depending on the application area.
