This standard describes tests to determine the UV resistance of sheath materials of electrical and optical indoor and outdoor cables. Three alternative methods are described using xenon arc source, fluorescent lamp and mercury vapour lamp to simulate the UV effect on the cable sheath. The main change from the first edition of this standard is that products where UV resistance is achieved by 2.5% carbon black content in accordance with the dispersion requirements of EN 50290-2-24, or for products with an absorption coefficient greater than 400-/mm as described in Telcordia GR-20, do not need to be tested. The responsible committee is DKE/K 412 "Kommunikationskabel (Kabel, Leitungen, Wellenleiter, Lichtwellenleiter, Komponenten, Zubehör und Anlagentechnik für die Nachrichten- und Informationsübertragung" ("Communication cables (cables, conductors, waveguides, fibre optic cables, components, accessories and systems technology for communication and data transmission") of the DKE (German Commission for Electrical, Electronic and Information Technologies) at DIN and VDE.
This document replaces DIN EN 50289-4-17:2011-10; VDE 0819-289-4-17:2011-10 .
