This standard defines relevant requirements set out in Annex I of the new EC Machinery Directive 2006/42/EC, relating to machines which were placed on the European Economic Area (EEA) market for the first time, with the intent of simplifying the means of proving conformity with such requirements. Once this standard is designated a harmonized standard in the Official Journal of the European Communities, a manufacturer applying this standard may assume compliance with the requirements of the Machinery Directive (the so-called presumption of conformity). This standard specifies safety and hygiene requirements for the design and manufacture of fixed bowl planetary mixers of capacity greater than or equal to 5 l and less than 500 l used to process various ingredients, for example cocoa, flour, sugar, oils and fat, minced meat, eggs, and so on, in the food industry and shops. These machines are also sometimes used in other industries (for example, pharmaceutical industry, chemical industry, printing), but hazards related to these uses are not considered in this standard. The following machines are excluded: accessory planetary mixers; continuously fed machines; dough mixers; experimental and testing machines under development by the manufacturers; domestic appliances. The intended use of the machine, as defined in 3.12 of EN 292-1:1991 and in the manufacturer's instruction handbook, is loading various ingredients, processing them in a stationary bowl by means of appropriate beaters, unloading and cleaning. Processing is carried out in cycles of variable duration. It can be either manually or automatically-controlled, in individual cycles or on a cycle repeat basis, and so on. Manual operations are sometimes necessary to add ingredients without stopping the beater. On machines fitted with a bowl lifting and lowering device or with a device for moving the bowl/head/beater vertically, the working position is that when the beater is nearest to the bottom of the bowl. The significant hazards covered by this standard are mechanical (shearing, trapping, loss of stability), electrical, thermal, ergonomic and also hazards resulting from gas accumulation, noise, inhalation of dust, and lack of hygiene. This standard relates only to machines manufactured after the date of its issue. This standard contains the German version of EN 454:2000+A1:2009 which has been prepared by Technical Committee CEN/TC 153 "Machinery intended for use with foodstuffs and feed" of the European Committee for Standardization (CEN). The following changes have been made with respect to DIN EN 454:2000: a) The standard has been changed and adapted with respect to the new Machinery Directive 2006/42/EC; b) An informative Annex ZB on the relationship between this European Standard and the Essential Requirements of Machinery Directive 2006/42/EC has been added. The national interests during the preparation of the standard were represented by Committee NA 060-18-01 AA "Bäckereimaschinen" ("Bakery equipment") of Technical Section "Food Processing Machinery" of the Mechanical Engineering Standards Committee (NAM) at DIN. Representatives of the interested parties were involved in the preparation of this standard.
