Overview

This European Standard defines relevant requirements set out in Annex I of the EC Machinery Directive 2006/42/EC, relating to machines which were placed on the European Economic Area (EEA) market for the first time, with the intent of simplifying the means of proving conformity with such requirements. Once this standard is designated a harmonized standard in the Official Journal of the European Communities, the manufacturer applying this standard may assume compliance with the requirements of the Machinery Directive (the so-called presumption of conformity). This document deals with all significant hazards, hazardous situations and events as listed in clause 4 which are relevant to stationary multi-blade rip sawing machines, hereinafter referred to as "machines", designed to cut solid wood, chipboard, fibreboard, plywood and also these materials, if they are covered with plastic edging and/or plastic/light alloy laminates, when they are used as intended and under the conditions foreseen by the manufacturer including reasonably foreseeable misuse; see also 6.3. This document does not apply to machines with vertical roller feed or vertical chain conveyor feed or machines designed to make the first rip cut on a log. This document does not deal with any hazards relating to the combination of single machines with any other machine as part of a line. This document is not applicable to machines which are manufactured before the date of its publication as EN. Machines covered by this document are listed under 1.3 of the Machinery Directive. This standard contains the German version of EN 1870-4:2012 which has been prepared by Technical Committee CEN/TC 142 "Woodworking machines - Safety" of the European Committee for Standardization (CEN). The standard has been completely revised. The following significant modifications have been made with regard to DIN EN 1870-4:2010-02 as follows: a) update of normative references to new editions of the cited standards; b) in subclause 5.2 "Controls" the design requirements for control circuits in certain categories have been replaced by specifications for performance levels. For specific operations, requirements for setting modes and mode selection, and new requirements for powered adjustments have been specified; c) in clause "Protection against mechanical hazards", new requirements for the tensile strength of guards have been specified and the requirements for devices to prevent the possibility or the effect of ejection have been completely revised; new types of anti-kickback fingers have been included; in addition, new requirements for the protective measures at the outfeed of the machine have been specified; d) in clause "Emission of chips and dust", additional requirements for the emission behaviour of the machine have been specified; e) the requirements for the instruction handbook of the machine have been extended to more than 3 pages of text; f) the informative Annex ZA on the relationship between this European Standard and the essential requirements of EU Directive 98/37/EC has been dropped. During the preparation the national interests were represented by Working Committee NA 060-06-01 AA "Holzbearbeitungsmaschinen - Sicherheit" ("Woodworking machines - Safety") of the Mechanical Engineering Standards Committee (NAM) of DIN. Manufacturers' representatives and users of multiblade rip sawing machines with manual loading and/or unloading, as well as representatives of professional and trade associations were involved in the preparation of the standard.
