This standard defines relevant requirements set out in Annex I of EU Machinery Directive 2006/42/EC, relating to machines which were placed on the European Economic Area (EEA) market for the first time, with the intent of simplifying the means of proving conformity with these requirements. Once this standard is designated a harmonized standard in the Official Journal of the European Union, a manufacturer applying this standard may assume compliance with the requirements of the Machinery Directive (the so-called presumption of conformity). This European Standard deals with all significant hazards, hazardous situations and events as listed in Clause 4 which are relevant to stationary and displaceable dimensions saws, hereinafter referred to as "machines", designed to cut solid wood, chipboard, fibreboard, plywood and also these materials, if they are covered with plastic edging and/or plastic laminates, when they are used as intended and under the conditions foreseen by the manufacturer including reasonably foreseeable misuse. The requirements of this document apply for all machines, independent of their control type, for example electromechanical and/or electronic. This document does not apply to: a) machines set up on a bench or a table similar to a bench, which are intended to carry out work in a stationary position, capable of being lifted by one person by hand; the bench can also be an integrated part of the machine if it consists of hinged legs which can be extended down; b) machines fitted with hydraulically powered machine actuators; c) machines fitted with powered work-piece positioning; d) machines fitted with the facility for either ripping, milling (including trenching and grooving), sanding and/or drilling; e) machines equipped with more than one saw spindle speed; f) machines with integrated feed. This document is not applicable to manual horizontal cutting cross-cut circular sawing machines with one saw unit (manual radial arm saws) which are manufactured before the date of its publication as EN. This standard contains the German version of EN 1870-17:2012+A1:2015 which has been prepared by Technical Committee CEN/TC 142 "Woodworking machines - Safety" at the European Committee for Standardization (CEN). This standard differs from DIN EN 1870-17:2013-01 as follows: a) in 5.3.6.1 "Guarding of the saw blade", the option of the access component for saw blade changing being a fixed guard has been deleted. The national interests during the preparation are represented by Committee NA 060-06-01 AA "Holzbearbeitungsmaschinen - Sicherheit" ("Woodworking machines - Safety") at Technical Section "Woodworking machines" at DIN Standards Committee Mechanical Engineering (NAM). Representatives of manufacturers and users of horizontal cutting cross-cut circular sawing machines with one saw unit (manual radial arm saws) and of the employers' liability insurance associations contributed to this standard.
This document replaces DIN EN 1870-17:2013-01 .
