This document sets out the rules for the indication of leather in the labels or markings of non-textile parts of textile products where leather is used as a part, component, ornament or trim. Regulation (EU) No 1007/2011 of the European Parliament and of the Council of 27 September 2011 on textile fibre names and related labelling and marking of the fibre composition of textile products and repealing Council Directive 73/44/EEC and Directives 96/73/EC and 2008/121/EC of the European Parliament and of the Council (OJ no L 272 of 18 October 2011) lays down, amongst others, rules concerning the labelling or marking of certain textile products which contain non-textile parts of animal origin. It sets out the requirement to indicate the presence of non-textile parts of animal origin on the labelling or marking of textile products containing such parts, in order to enable consumers to make informed choices. Leather falls into the category of materials covered by the terminology "non-textile part of animal origin". This document covers the requirements for a label or marking of leather trims in textile products and proposes a model label or marking that complies with the mandatory requirements as set out in Regulation (EU) No 1007/2011 ensuring consistency with the CEN Standards regarding the identification of leather and the terminology of the leather industry. This document has been prepared by Technical Committee CEN/TC 289 "Leather", the secretariat of which is held by UNI (Italy). The responsible national body is Working Committee NA 062-05-51 AA "Anforderungen und physikalische Prüfverfahren für Leder und seine Ausgangsprodukte" ("Requirements and physical test methods of leather and...") at DIN Standards Committee Material Testing (NMP).
