This standard specifies requirements necessary for the granting of an exceptional authorisation to economic players to prove that the production of raw materials is not contrary to nature protection purposes, the removal of raw materials within protected grasslands is only permitted when this is necessary for preservation of their status and the production, cultivation and harvesting of raw materials in wetlands does not lead to drainage of these wetlands. This standard is applicable for the production of biofuels and bioliquids as well as the cultivation and harvest of the areas referred to in Directive 2009/28/EC in accordance with Article 17(3)(b), Article 17(3)(c)(ii) and Article 17(5). This standard was prepared with the aim of providing the economic players with support in the realisation of Directive 2009/28/EC on the promotion of the use of energy from renewable sources and amending and subsequently repealing Directives 2001/77/EC and 2003/30/EC (Renewable Energy Directive, RED). The committee responsible for the standard is NA 172-00-10 AA "Nachhaltigkeitskriterien für Biomasse" ("Sustainability criteria for biomass") at DIN.
