This standard specifies requirements and test methods for semi-finished products such as round rods, tubular bars, and flat bars made from thermoplastic materials. Semi-finished products are predominantly used for the manufacture of finished parts by means of machining. This standard contains the contents of the withdrawn 1994 edition of the European draft standard prEN 1549 with the title "General requirements of thermoplastic profiles for machining". The current standard completely replaces the following German standards: DIN 16809:1980-05, DIN 16941:1986-05, DIN 16978:1975-08, DIN 16980:1987-05, DIN 16983:1980-05, DIN 16985:1989-06 and DIN 16986:1987-05. It includes the semi-finished products "round rods", "tubular bars", "sheets", and "flat bars". The tolerances have been adapted to the state of the art and the diameter or thickness ranges have been expanded. Furthermore, new materials and modified/fibre-reinforced materials have been added - including the specifications of tolerances of size, straightness tolerances, physical properties of materials (guideline and setpoint values) and dimensional stability. The European Standard EN 15860 has been prepared by CEN/TC 249 "Plastics" (secretariat: NBN, Belgium). On the European level German Working Committee NA 054-04-02 AA "Halbzeuge aus Thermoplasten" ("Thermoplastic semi-finished products") of FNK has participated in the preparation of the standard.
