This standard (protocol) is intended to be used for operational data acquisition in fleet management applications in the field of municipal vehicles. The purpose of the standard is to define how operating data from a vehicle or an attached device are created, stored and transferred to an on-board computer system in the vehicle and then from the on-board computer to the software application in the office (service yard). The operating data is generated by an ECU on the attached device or vehicle. This data is stored in a buffer memory as soon as it is available. The data transfer program in the attached device or vehicle sends the data in the buffer memory to the on-board computer or to a data acquisition system. The buffer memory is intended to ensure that data is not lost if transmission is not possible. The size and type of the buffer are not defined in this proposal. If no buffer is available or its capacity is too small to store new data, then data will be lost. In order to synchronize time stamps of the vehicle/attachment device with the on-board computer, a special data set is defined for this time synchronization. This part of the standard defines the operating data to be recorded in the attachment device/vehicle and its transmission (communication) from the vehicle/attachment device to the on-board computer. The committee responsible for this standard is NA 051-03-02 AA "Maschinen für den Straßenbetriebsdienst (Spiegelgremium für CEN/TC 151/WG 16 und CEN/TC 337)" ("Highway maintenance machines (Mirror Committee of CEN/TC 151/WG 16 and CEN/TC 337)") of DIN Standards Committee Municipal Services (NKT).
