Overview

The amendment of the EU Construction Products Directive (89/106/EEC) into the EU Construction Products Regulation (305/2011/EU) requires certain formal changes to be taken into account in the harmonized product specifications. This results in consequences for the manufacturers of shower trays. Shower trays are used for personal hygiene; that is, preferably for showering and complete cleaning of the human body. As a rule shower trays are equipped with a drain hole. The various designs of shower trays differ in depth and installation methods. A classification of shower trays was introduced due to different functional requirements in the Member States. The standard refers to the two mandative requirements cleanability and durability. In this context, cleanability is understood as the properties that allow surfaces intended to come into contact with water to remain non-absorbent and visibly free of contamination and/or stains when subjected to maintenance, which may include, as appropriate, special instructions for use and care specified by the manufacturer. Durability, on the other hand, is characterized by features of materials intended for contact with water and their surfaces, which allow the expected life of the product. By means of special test methods, these requirements for shower trays, such as surface condition, water run-off, resistance to temperature changes, chemicals and staining agents, surface resistance, stability of the floor, which are necessary to confirm their fitness for use, are verified. CEN/TC 163 "Sanitary appliances" is aware that the new requirements resulting from Regulation 305/2011/EU for manufacturers of sanitary appliances and the previously non-compliant specifications of the relevant harmonized European standards have caused considerable unrest and uncertainty among the players on the market. On the initiative of the German delegation in CEN/TC 163, the short-term amendment or revision of all these standards, including EN 14527, was initiated. The content of the revision of this standard is the introduction of the section "Hazardous substances", the modification of the labeling of products, the replacement of the clause "Conformity assessment" by "Assessment and verification of constancy of performance - AVCP" and the replacement of Annex ZA by the new Annex ZA in accordance with the provisions of Regulation 305/2011/EU. NA 119-05-18-10 UA "Bade- und Duscheinrichtungen" ("Bath and shower installations") at DIN Standards Committee Water Practice (NAW) is responsible for the national mirroring of this work.
