The Technical Committees responsible for this document are CEN/TC 307 "Oilseeds, vegetable and animal fats and oils and their by-products - Methods of sampling and analysis" and CEN/TC 19 "Gaseous and liquid fuels, lubricants and related products of petroleum, synthetic and biological origin". Regarding the German collaboration, the responsible Committee is NA 062-06-32-01 UA "Prüfung von FAME" ("Testing of FAME") at the Petroleum, Fuels, Lubricants and Related Products Standardization Committee (FAM) of the Materials Testing Standards Committee (NMP), in collaboration with NA 057-05-05 AA "Gemeinschaftsausschuss für die Analytik von Fetten, Ölen, Fettprodukten, verwandten Stoffen und Rohstoffen" ("Joint Committee for the analysis of fats, oil, fat products, related substances and raw materials") of the Food and Agricultural Products Standards Committee (NAL). This document specifies a method to determine the free glycerol and residual mono-, di- and triglyceride contents in fatty acid methyl esters (FAME) intended for addition to mineral oils. The total glycerol content is then calculated from the results obtained. The quantification limits are 0,001 % for free glycerol and 0,10 % (m/m) for all glycerides (mono-, di- and tri-glycerides) for the specified analytical conditions. The method is suitable for FAME from rapeseed, sunflower, soybean and palm oils, animal oils and fats and mixtures of them. It is not suitable for FAME produced from or containing coconut and palm kernel oils because of overlapping of peaks.
