This European Standard specifies a method for determining the adhesion of a bituminous emulsion coated onto aggregate when immersed in water.
The method considers two different aspects of adhesivity, that is immediate adhesivity and water effect on binder adhesion.
The method may be used with a reference aggregate. In that case, it measures the intrinsic adhesion behaviour of a bituminous emulsion. The method may also be used with a specific aggregate as used on a job site.
The use of this standard may involve hazardous materials, operations and equipment. This European Standard does not purport to address all of the safety problems associated with its use. It is the responsibility of the user of this European Standard to establish appropriate safety and health practices and determine the applicability of regulatory limitations prior to use.
The bituminous emulsion is mixed thoroughly with the considered aggregate under specified conditions.
When testing immediate adhesivity, the mixture is immediately washed under running water and the percentage of the aggregate surface covered with binder is assessed visually under specified conditions.
When testing water effect on binder adhesion, the mixture is first left to cure and then immersed under water under specified conditions. The percentage of the aggregate surface covered with binder is assessed visually under specified conditions.
Conformity to the "adhesivity" requirement specified in EN 13808 is to be assessed while measuring the water effect on binder adhesion with a reference aggregate.
This document (EN 13614:2011) has been prepared by Technical Committee CEN/TC 336 "Bituminous binders", the secretariat of which is held by AFNOR (France).
The responsible German committee is Joint Working Committee NA 062-03-32 GA "Bitumen; Prüfverfahren und Anforderungen für Bindemittel" ("Bitumen; test methods and specifications of binders") of the Materials Testing Standards Committee (NMP) and the Building and Civil Engineering Standards Committee (NABau) at DIN.
In Germany, the reference aggregate as specified in the note in 5.1 is Taunus-Quarzit 8/10.
This standard differs from DIN EN 13614:2004-05 as follows:
a) Principally, in the description of the test, a distinction is now made between the determination of the immediate adhesivity and the water effect on the binder adhesion (several passages in the document);
b) new terms have been added: "immediate adhesivity" (3.3) and "water effect on binder adhesion" (3.4);
c) in Clause 8, a distinction is made between "determination of immediate adhesivity" and "water effect on binder adhesion"; a distinction between "emulsions of limited storage stability" and "emulsions which can be stored" is no longer made.
This document replaces DIN EN 13614:2004-05 .
