This standard helps designers, manufacturers and suppliers of abrasive products to achieve conformity with the essential safety requirements of the EC Machinery Directive and associated EFTA regulations. This standard applies only to superabrasive products manufactured or maintained in the first 12 months after publication of this standard. It specifies requirements and measures for the removal or reduction of hazards resulting from the design or application of the superabrasive products. In detail, the following abrasive products are within the scope of this standard: precision superabrasive grinding and cutting-off wheels, non-precision cutting-off wheels, diamond wires, mounted points and other superabrasive products for with diamond or CBN for non-precision grinding. The standard also applies for reconditioned superabrasive cutting-off wheels, but not to bonded abrasive products, coated abrasive products, rotating dressing tools, truers or any non-rotating superabrasive products with diamond or CBN. The standard also contains procedures for verification of the compliance with the requirements as well as information for use which is to be made available to the user by the manufacturer. In the standard, two main groups of hazards are taken into consideration: the ejection of parts and vibration produced during operation. The first group includes, in addition to the detachment of abrasive products during the grinding process, abrasive product breakage caused by improper design, manufacturing defects, wrong selection of tools and incorrect mounting of the abrasive product on the grinding machine and errors during grinding. The second group includes an imbalance produced by manufacturing defects or incorrect mounting. Various normative and informative annexes in the standard deal with the following topics: marking of the superabrasive products, including colour coding, particular requirements for mounted points and the reconditioning of non-precision cutting-off wheels. Furthermore, a conversion table for speed of rotation and operating speed is given. This standard contains the German version of the European Standard which has been prepared by CEN/TC 143/WG 2 "Stationary grinding machines and abrasive products - Safety" (secretariat: DIN) of CEN/TC 143 "Machine tools - Safety", the secretariat of which is held by SNV (Switzerland). The responsible German Committee is Working Committee NA 121-04-02 AA "Schleifwerkzeuge mit Diamant oder Bornitrid" ("Superabrasives with diamond or CBN") of FWS.
