This European Standard specifies the general design features, requirements and test methods for portable ladders. The standard does not apply to step stools or ladders for specific professional use such as fire brigade ladders, roof ladders and mobile ladders. The 1993 version of EN 131-2 has been completely revised by CEN/TC 93 "Ladders". The other parts of the standard series EN 131-1 (sizes), EN 131-3 (user requirements) and EN 131-4 (multiple hinge-joint ladders) have already been published in 2007. Compared to the previous version the test loads of the strength test of the stiles and the bottom stile ends test have been increased. The loading test of the platform of a standing ladder has been modified in order to improve stability. A kick-up test of the platform, a feet pull test, a test on hand-/kneerails and a torsion test have been added. For plastic ladders, comprehensive tests for the determination of the heat resistance, UV stability and the electrical properties have been added. The test sequence is specified in a new annex. Another annex contains information on current deviating national legal provisions (A-deviations) in Italy, the Netherlands and Sweden. Some aspects, given by the European Commission in a mandate for the preparation of standards on the safety of ladders, could only partly be taken into account, thus far. This includes tests and requirements for the stability and for classification of ladders on the basis of dynamic tests. Possible solutions are currently being further discussed by CEN/TC 93. The Committee responsible for this standard is NA 042-04-20 AA "Spiegelausschuss zu CEN/TC 93 Leitern" ("Mirror Committee to CEN 93 Ladders").
