The standard (DIN EN 13053:2011, inclusive A1:2011) has been prepared by Technical Committee CEN/TC 156 "Ventilation for buildings", the secretariat of which is held by BSI. It supersedes edition DIN EN 13053:2007. The national interests during the preparation were represented by the Technical Section Allgemeine Lufttechnik (General ventilation technology) of the Mechanical Engineering Standards Committee (NAM) at DIN. Representatives of the interested parties, including manufacturers of air-handling units and test institutes were involved in the preparation. DIN EN 13053:2007 specifies requirements and testing for ratings and performance of air handling units as a whole. It also specifies requirements, recommendations, classification, and testing of specific components and sections of air handling units. For many components and sections it refers to component standards, but it also specifies restrictions or applications of standards developed for stand alone components. The standard is applicable both to standardised designs, which may be in a range of sizes having common construction concepts, and also to custom-design units. It also applies both to air handling units, which are completely prefabricated, and to units which are built up on site. Generally the units within the scope of this standard include at least a fan, a heat exchanger and an air filter. The purpose of the supplement (DIN EN 13053/A1) is to modify the significant energy-related characteristics of air handling units and to define supplementary information to allow better and more practicable classification of energy. This concerns in particular the following clauses and topics: 6.3 "Fan section" - new subdivision of the air velocity classes in the casing in connection with new clause 6.3.2 "Power input of fans". 6.5.2 "Classifications and requirements" (heat recovery section) - deletion of Table 5 (heat recovery efficiency and pressure losses depending on the operating hours per downstream face) and of the following text, replaced by new version of text with new Table 6 including classes of heat recovery. New informative Annex B "Air handling units - Heat recovery - Characteristics".
