Overview

This standard defines relevant requirements set out in Annex I of EU Machinery Directive 2006/42/EC, relating to machines which were placed on the European Economic Area (EEA) market for the first time, with the intent of simplifying the means of proving conformity with these requirements. Once this standard is cited in the Official Journal of the European Union, it is deemed a "harmonized" standard and thus, a manufacturer applying this standard may assume compliance with the requirements of the Machinery Directive ("presumption of conformity"). This European Standard specifies general principles and requirements to be used together with EN 13001-2 and the EN 13001-3 series of standards, and as such they specify conditions and requirements on design to prevent mechanical hazards of cranes, and a method of verification of those requirements. Specific requirements for particular types of crane are given in the appropriate European Standard for the particular crane type. The following is a list of significant hazardous situations and hazardous events that could result in risks to persons during normal use and foreseeable misuse (of the crane). Clause 4 of this European Standard is necessary to reduce or eliminate the risks associated with the following hazards: a) instability of the crane or its parts (tilting); b) exceeding the limits of strength (yield, ultimate, fatigue); c) elastic instability of the crane or its parts (buckling, bulging); d) exceeding temperature limits of material or components; e) exceeding the deformation limits. This European Standard is applicable to cranes which are manufactured after the date of approval by CEN of this standard and serves as reference base for the European Standards for particular crane types. This European Standard contains the German version of EN 13001-1:2015 which has been prepared by Technical Committee CEN/TC 147 "Cranes - Safety" of the European Committee for Standardization (CEN). This standard differs from DIN EN 13001-1:2009-12 and DIN EN 13001-1 Corrigendum1:2010-06 as follows: a) Subclause 4.2.7.2 "Allowable stress method"; b) Subclause 4.3.3 "Average linear or angular displacements"; c) Subclause 4.4.4 "Classification of stress histories"; d) Annex B (informative) "Discreet and continuous distributions" has been added. The national interests during the preparation of the standard were represented by the committee NA 060-22-10-21 AK "Konstruktion - Allgemein ("Design - General") (SpA CEN/TC 147/WG 2 and SpA ISO/TC 96/SC 10)" and the committee NA 060-22-10 AA "Lenkungsausschuss Krane und Hebezeuge" ("Steering committee cranes and lifting equipment") at Technical Section "Krane und Hebezeuge" ("Cranes and lifting equipment") of the DIN Standards Committee Mechanical Engineering (NAM) at DIN. Representatives of the manufacturers and users of cranes and lifting equipment as well as of professional and trade associations were involved in the preparation of this standard.
