Overview

The European Standard has been prepared to provide one means of conforming with essential safety requirements, for example, of the Safety Product Directive and associated EFTA regulations. It is addressed to designers, manufacturers and suppliers of the abrasive products described in the scope. In addition, the standard helps designers, manufacturers and suppliers of grinding machines in the selection of abrasive products, in order to reduce the risks and achieve conformity of the respective machinery with the Essential safety requirements of the Machinery Directive.

The standard contains

  • terms and short signs for bonded abrasive products and grinding machines

  • a list of the hazards or hazardous situations with information in which clause of the standard the corresponding requirement can be found

  • requirements with regard to maximum operating speeds, strengths, dimensional limitations in connection with shape, types of machine and application and maximum operating speeds

  • test, verification of the requirements and verification methods

  • requirements for marking of abrasive products

  • calculation of the maximum permissible speeds of rotation for mounted points

  • description of verification methods for side load capacity

  • layout and design of colour codes as optional marking of the abrasive products with the value of the maximum operating speed

  • conversion of the maximum operating speed into the corresponding speed.

The data of the standard are not applicable to abrasive products with diamond or CBN and grinding machines with coated abrasive products.

The European Standard has been prepared by CEN/TC 143/WG 2 "Grinding machines - Safety" (secretariat: DIN). On the national level, the responsible Working Committee is NA 121-04-04 AA "Schleifkörper aus gebundenem Schleifmittel" ("Bonded abrasives") at FWS.

With Amendment A1, which is contained in this standard, a tightening of the requirements for the minimum percentage for "all other abrasive products" to be tested with certain outside diameters, widths and maximum operating speeds which has been introduced in DIN EN 12413:2007-09 has been cancelled.
