Switchable sockets according to this standard belong to the so-called "HNA installation material", the standardization of which was started by the "Commercial Ship Standards Committee" in the 1920s. They consist of a surface-mounted casing with a special collar lid. A switch insert according to DIN 89322 is mounted below this cover and is operated from the outside by a toggle. A screw cap is used to close the unused socket opening. The switchable sockets are used in electrical installations of ships with operating voltages up to 250 V, preferably outdoors and in the engine room, because they withstand rough operation and are waterproof. Due to the asymmetrical contact arrangement with first make last break protective contact they can be used in DC and AC voltage systems. Connectable cable types are included, for example, in DIN 89160 and in the standards of the VG 95218 series. Plugs according to DIN 89267 fit into the socket. The "old" DIN 89263 from 1997 contains several invalid reference standards and obsolete material designations which have been corrected. Requirements and tests have been formulated more precisely in some cases. The present standard has been prepared by NA 132-03-52 AA "Installationsmaterial" ("Installation material") at DIN.
This document replaces DIN 89263:1997-06 .
