Overview

This standard applies to equipment combinations with which the intended operation of a ballast water system is to be monitored and verified (documented) in the course of ballast water management in accordance with the applicable ballast water management plan. The procedures to be applied according to this standard should ensure that the ballast water management procedures (ballast water treatment according to IMO BWM/CONF/36, Regulation D 2) specified by the International Maritime Organization (IMO) or its subcommittee Marine Environment Protection Committee (MEPC) are complied with by the selected installation. The standard describes the monitoring of required parameters of the BWTS (Ballast Water Treatment System). Further method-specific information is usually specified by the basic principle of operation of the BWTS; these are for example filtration, disinfection by means of electrolyte systems or direct dosing systems, or also UV systems. Additional, important information, which is relevant due to the special operating system, is usually specified by the manufacturer as monitoring information. System alarms and displays, up to additional alarms, are described for the function of the operation or operating system. The requirement for storage and recovery sets clear requirements that shall be met or ensured by the devices; for example, the system automatically stores the required data without user interaction and adds a timestamp to each entry. Permanent deletion of records should not be possible. Appendix A (normative) presents the functional records of the BWTS in a specified log form. The log fixes the system parameter type, parameter type, and others. This standard has been prepared by DIN Standards Committee Shipbuilding and Marine Technology (NSMT), NA 132-02-11 AA "Schutz der Meeresumwelt" ("Marine environment protection").
