Overview

This standard describes the principles of application of the probe method for dosimetry in radiotherapy. The standard is used to measure absorbed dose at a point in an irradiated material and to determine relative absorbed dose values at points in or on the human body or phantom for photon radiation in the energy range from 10 keV to 50 MeV and electron radiation from 2 MeV to 50 MeV in teletherapy. The standard describes the procedure for determining absorbed dose to water with calibrated dosimeters and general guidance is given on probe positioning, calibration factor and required corrections. A chapter on phantoms in which the properties of various water-equivalent phantom materials are given has been newly included. The procedure for determining absorbed dose to water in these solid phantoms is described and the data required for this purpose are given. The standard contains the essential properties of dosimeter probes for the determination of dose distributions and guidance is given on the selection of suitable probes for various measurement tasks. The determination of the dose delivered to the surrounding material from the measured absorbed dose to water is described. The data required for the conversion are given for several materials. The standard describes the procedure for determining the measurement uncertainty. The standard does not apply to photon and beta radiation used in brachytherapy. The special rules for the application of different types of dosimeters (for example, ionization chamber dosimeters, film dosimeters, thermoluminescence dosimeters) according to the probe method are specified in further parts of the DIN 6800 series of standards. The standard has been prepared at Working Committee NA 080-00-01 AA "Dosimetrie" ("Dosimetry") of DIN Standards Committee Radiology (NAR).
