The labelling of, for example, handrails, doors, elevator display boards, control elements as well as layout plans, reliefs and outdoor models with Braille and raised tactile lettering as well as pictograms serves to provide guidance and orientation of blind and visually impaired persons in traffic facilities and publicly accessible buildings as well as in communal facilities of housing complexes. This standard specifies requirements and measures for Braille and raised tactile lettering for indoor and outdoor use. It regulates the design and arrangement of the information elements so that blind and visually impaired persons can easily recognize, read and interpret this information. This standard does not describe technical procedures for the production of Braille and raised tactile lettering. This standard is not valid for the use of Braille and raised tactile lettering for printing and other (non-stationary) reliefs as well as labels on medical devices, labelling of goods, devices and items of any kind. Furthermore, no specifications are made on the use of Braille and raised black and/or tactile lettering in the area of electronic devices (Braille terminals, Braille displays), unless such tactile electronic displays serve to provide guidance, orientation and convey information in the public sphere. The requirements of this standard shall be taken into consideration in these cases. This standard has been prepared by Working Committee NA 063-06-04 AA "Kommunikations- und Orientierungshilfen für Blinde und Sehbehinderte" ("Assistive products for communication and orientation for blind and visually impaired persons") at the DIN Standards Committee Medicine (NAMed).
