Overview

This standard specifies the romanization of the Japanese Kana syllabary in Latin letters in accordance with the modified Hepburn-system. This romanization shall be preferred due to its international distribution, in particular in science, media, public life and librarianship and also due to its greater proximity to the actual pronunciation over the kunrei-shiki romanization specified in ISO 3602. This standard has been prepared by the Information and Documentation Standards Committee, Working Committee NABD 1 "Transliteration und Transkription" ("Transliteration and Transcription").
