This standard describes a field method for the on-site measurement of saturated hydraulic conductivity of soils. This involves a widely spread and often used method based on empirical equations. Homogeneous and isotropic soils form the basis of the solution approach; however, multilayer profiles with differing conductivities are not addressed. Another prerequisite for the practicability of the method is a high level of non-confined groundwater or backwater. The measurements can only be performed below the groundwater or backwater surface (resting groundwater table) which remains constant over the total measurement time. The auger hole method is not applicable for confined groundwater. The more irregular the soil structure the more parallel investigations are necessary. Therefore, the investigation sites are required to be carefully selected by preceding mapping in accordance with the pedological mapping guidelines. Refer to DIN 18130-2 for special investigations in foundations, earthworks and waste disposal facilities in order to calculate groundwater flows and for assessment of the conductivity of sealing and injection wells. The committee responsible for this standard is NA 119-01-02-02 UA "Chemische und physikalische Verfahren" ("Chemical and physical methods") at DIN.
