This standard applies to fire extinguishing systems which are limited by application, extinguishing medium and extinguishing medium quantity. It is also applicable for single-zone extinguishing systems for the protection of objects, such as, for instance, machines, technical equipment, EDP server cabinets, kitchen equipment and similar objects. Small fire extinguishing systems can also be used for mobile objects, for instance, industrial machines. It is possible that additional measures can be practical or necessary for such applications. This standard applies to the extinguishing mediums water and aqueous solutions, foam and powder, carbon dioxide, non-liquid inert gases and halogenated hydrocarbons. Specifications for the maximum extinguishing quantity are included. This standard does not apply to fire extinguishing systems - with a common extinguishing medium supply which serve for the protection of several objects via selector valves; - which discharge extinguishing medium intermittently; - which are used as volume protection systems; - in underground mining; - in the German armed forces sector; - on sea-going ships as well as water craft and floating equipment for inland waterways; - in the aviation sector; - in appliances for the transport of persons and for motorsport; - for the suppression of explosions; - for which, in the instance of a hazard due to the extinguishing medium, a pre-discharge warning time shall be complied with. In cases in which entering the flooding zone which is not accessible during normal operation is required in exceptional cases (for instance, maintenance), it is necessary that an effective blocking of the extinguishing system shall be possible in the instance of a hazard to persons.
