Rescue blankets and cushions in accordance with this standard are equipment to catch free falling persons as carefully as possible; they are used by the fire brigade to rescue people. Rescue blankets and cushions are divided into: a) rescue blankets and cushions, which can only be used with a crew holding the equipment (jumping sheets, see DIN 14151-2): 1) jumping sheet without support; 2) jumping sheet with support; b) rescue blankets and cushions for which an operating crew is necessary to establish and re-establish readiness for use (jumping cushions, see DIN 14151-3). Rescue blankets and cushions do not replace other measures to meet the requirements of preventative and active fire protection. The standard has been amended and published as a consolidated new edition in order to formulate the text of subclause 4.5 about the risk of injury of the crew holding the equipment or the operating crew and the persons to be rescued free of interpretation. The requirements in subclause 4.5 are mainly intended to protect the operating personnel or the personnel holding the cushion or blanket, as the deceleration values, also when the impact takes place in the centre of the rescue blankets and cushions, are so high that injuries of the persons to be rescued cannot always be excluded. This fact is already mentioned in the foreword of the standard: "Risks of injury for the persons to be rescued cannot be excluded even if the rescue blankets and cushions are used as intended. Showjumping and practice jumping of persons are not permitted." The consolidated new edition of the standard which is necessary for more clarification has been prepared by Working Committee NA 031-04-09 AA "Sonstige Ausrüstung - SpA zu CEN/TC 192/WG 5" ("Other equipment - Mirror Committee of CEN/TC 192/WG 5") of FNFW.
