Overview

This standard applies for the writing and the typesetting of mathematical, physical and chemical formulae in science and technology. It is intended to assist authors (and, if applicable, also editors, lay readers, typesetters and proofreaders) to achieve good typesetting of formulae which fulfil the following criteria: 1. Formulae consisting of characters, symbols and their combinations (for instance, in equations) should already obviously emerge in their typographical image. 2. Formula characters should be differentiated for different meanings by different letters, or if this is not possible by font, by indices or the such, as long these correspond with the general agreements. 3. All characters shall be compatible with each other in shape and size and should be easily and clearly legible, even if they stand alone. 4. Formulae shall be clear and legible without any misunderstandings. The Committee responsible for this standard is NA 152-01-01-04 AK "Formelsatz" ("Typesetting of formulae") at DIN.
