About this product

Plain language
DIN 8581-1 and DIN ISO 24495-1

(Please note: This publication is only available in German.)

As difficult as necessary, as plain as possible - this applies to non-literary texts. Comprehensibility and effective communication are the basis of plain language. Short, clearly structured sentences and the avoidance of foreign words and complicated formulations are further characteristics of a language for everyday communication. This is particularly important for public authorities, for example, but also for corporate communications or in medical facilities.

The two standards DIN 8581-1 and DIN ISO 24495-1 contain instructions for the design of plain language. The two documents are summarized in this volume and edited for optimal readability.

With this publication from DIN Media (in German only) you receive:

  • DIN 8581-1:2024-05, Plain language - Application for the German language - Part 1: Language-specific provisions
  • DIN ISO 24495-1:2024-03, Plain language - Part 1: Governing principles and guidelines

This book saves you money compared with the cost of buying each standard separately.

Standardized, target group-oriented communication

Plain language is useful wherever content takes precedence over form, information over style. It focuses on the clear communication of messages and should be relevant, traceable, understandable and helpful for the respective target group. Efforts are being made at both international and national level to standardize plain language and thus create binding standards. This publication contains the two standards that currently exist in Germany for plain language:

  • DIN ISO 24495-1:2024-03, Plain language - Part 1: Governing principles and guidelines
Plain language focusses on target groups: This standard defines the principles of communication - usually in writing - whose main task is to convey information to a specific target group. The principles are formulated as guidelines. A useful overview and a sample checklist round off this standard.

  • DIN 8581-1:2024-05, Plain language - Application for the German language - Part 1: Language-specific provisions
Based on the principles of DIN ISO 24495-1, this standard shows how the principles and guidelines are to be applied to the German language. It gives detail to the contents of DIN ISO 24495-1, contains requirements and further specifications for the text, sentence and word level.

This handbook "Plain Language - DIN 8581-1 and DIN ISO 24495-1" is more practical than buying the standards separately, as it is bundled in a compact format and cost less.
