Short description
Mosses react sensitively to anthropogenic influences that affect ecosystems. This makes them very suitable as bioindicators. The standard describes a standardised mapping procedure for determining moss diversity on tree bark using counting grids. The standardised mapping of epiphytic mosses enables spatial and temporal comparisons of moss occurrence within a study area and thus the delineation of areas of differing air quality. Deviations compared to a previous survey can be used to document changes in environmental conditions in the study area. The method described here harmonises the existing method for recording epiphytic mosses with the recording of lichens (VDI 3957 Part 13) and thus also facilitates the combined recording of both groups. It is adapted to the conditions in Central Europe with regard to the selection of moss species and carrier tree species. The standard is intended for permit authorities and monitoring authorities and, in particular, executing operators such as environmental engineering firms.
