Short description
The frequency range of terahertz waves is located in the range between 0,1 THz and 10 THz. It is also known as far infrared. The terahertz technology is advancing from the laboratories to applications due to significant progress in laser and microwave technology. One advantage of terahertz waves is, that they transmit - in contrast to infrared radiation - through dielectric material. Compared to microwave, terahertz features better spatial resolution. Additionally, many molecules have specific spectral fingerprints in this spectral region. Wireless communication will benefit from the wide frequency range enabling previously unattainable data rates. The standard defines terms needed for comparison and use of terahertz systems. Terms that are already commonly used have been deliberately adopted from other technical rules.
