Short description
The standard serves as the umbrella standard of the series of standards VDI 3957. It gives a review of the standardised methods regarding passive and active biomonitoring with higher plants, mosses and lichens as bioindicators. In addition, the standard contains definitions of relevant terms as well as basic information on quality assurance and documentation. The biological measuring techniques described allow the temporal and spatial distribution of the effects of air pollutants to be determined and the endangerment of plants and- via the food chain- of animals and humans to be assessed. They can be used preventively, e.g. in aid of decisions for precautionary immission protection, supportively in relation to immission measurements, for preserving evidence, control and for long-term monitoring of pollutants in the environment.
