Short description
This standard specifies a method for the measurement of the lung-deposited surface area of particles in ambient air. Furthermore it defines the task-specific requirements on the method and its performance characteristics. Depending on type and design of the instrument particles can be measured in the size range from approx. 10 nm to approx. 1 µm. When determining the lung-deposited surface area of particles that portion of the geometric surface area is determined which can be deposited either in the alveolar or tracheobronchial part of the human lung. Alveolar-deposited particle surface area concentrations in urban air are typically in the range from 5 µm2/cm3 bis 50 µm2/cm3.
