Short description
This guideline describes how the working results of grinding processes can be specifically controlled by the selection of the manipulated variables and other important input variables in dressing and trueing. It provides an overview of the processes and the dressing tools in use today, clarifies terminology and gives recommendations regarding not only the initial design of the dressing process but also its repeated application in the desired good reproducibility of dressing results. The guideline is divided into three harmonized parts. VDI 3392 Part 1 provides basic information about dressing all grinding wheel specifications as well as descriptions of how the dressing processes work. It also gives decision-making aids indicating which dressing processes and tools would be appropriate for which grinding wheels, here taking into account the material which the component to be ground is made of and the batch size of the component. Special information on dressing is given in VDI 3392 Part 2 for grinding wheels with conventional abrasives and in VDI 3392 Part 3 for those with superabrasives (CBN and diamond). Recommendations are given regarding selecting a dressing tool type appropriate for the dressing task in question. This is on the basis of the cutting materials used (diamond grits, diamond points), their dimensions and qualities and also the tool shapes. This is followed by practical information on the initial design of a dressing operation and on maintenance and care of the dressing tool. The guideline is aimed at production engineers and machine operators to help them in designing dressing processes as part of their work planning and preparation activities as well as in trouble-shooting and adapting or optimising existing processes.
