Short description
Brominated flame retardants, especially polybrominated dipehnylether (PBDE) and hexabromocyclododecane (HBCD) are widely used since decades to reduce the inflammability of many plastics and textiles. This additives are applied in vehicle and aircraft construction, in electrical devices, consumer products, building products, foam plastics, packing materials and furniture. Decoration tissue (curtains and draperies in theatre, cinema, ships), home textiles (floorings, bedclothes, draperies) as well as (protective) clothing are finished by flame retardants. The measurement method serves for determination of the concentration of polybrominated dipehnylether (PBDE), hexabromocyclododecane (HBCD) and hexabromobenzene in ambient air and indoor air. Active sampling of filter passing compounds and particle bound compounds is performed by a system of filter and PU foams. Quantification is performed after gas chromatographic separation either by low resolution mass spectrometry (LRMS) or by high resolution mass spectrometry (HRMS) using 13C labelled internal standards in both cases.
