Short description
The maximum concentrations for cadmium which will be presented below are intended to protect livestock. Such limits are usually derived from long-term experiments studying dose-response relationships in these animals. Cadmium limits can be set only for those species for which such studies have been performed. Cadmium poses a health hazard particularly to those livestock species which are outdoors part of the year or throughout the year. Herbivores, such as ruminants and horses, are more affected than chickens and pigs. Trade in fodder contaminated with cadmium may pose a hazard to livestock outside polluted areas.
