This Supplement contains information for the planning and construction of low-voltage electrical installations; for example, the various calculation methods required for calculating the limit lengths of cables and lines and for selecting the protective devices, taking into account the various protection goals. The selection tables listed for the limit lengths of cables and lines and device parameters with specified boundary parameters support the electricians in setting up a safe low-voltage system. Compared to DIN VDE 0100 Supplement 5 (VDE 0100 Supplement 5):1995-11, the following significant changes have been made: a) the values for the limit lengths in the tables have been revised. b) the derivation of the network series impedance and the line impedances has been formulated to be generally valid, not only for outgoing and return conductors with the same cross-section, as was previously the case. c) the conductor temperature was derived at the end of the fault time. d) The impedance angles of multi-conductor cables have been adjusted. e) notes were added on: - flow chart for determining the equipment and the coordination of a circuit - important formulas for calculating short circuits in accordance with IEC 60909-0 - General equipment data - checking protection in the event of a short circuit - determining the conductor temperature at the end of the fault time - determining the limit lengths for the voltage drop - simplified approach to checking selectivity. The responsible committee is DKE/UK 221.2 "Schutz gegen thermische Auswirkungen/Sachschutz" ("Protection against thermal effects/property protection") of the DKE (German Commission for Electrical, Electronic and Information Technologies) at DIN and VDE.
