This supplement contains information for protection against overload, selection of overcurrent protective devices, maximum permissible lengths of cables and cords taking into consideration voltage drop and disconnection times for protection against electric shock. This supplement is intended to provide the user of the standard with important information for the design of wiring systems as well as the overcurrent protective devices for residential buildings and similarly used buildings. With respect to DIN VDE 0100-520 Supplement 2 (VDE 0100-520 Supplement 2):2002-11, the following essential changes have been made: a) In Table 1, permissible current-carrying capacity values of cables and cords have been replaced by maximum permissible rated current values of an overcurrent protection device. Thus, a direct assignment of the suitable overcurrent protective device for protection against overload of cables and cords for frequently used types of installations is possible; b) the illustration of the maximum permissible lengths of cables and cords depending on the operation current has been omitted. The responsible Committee is Subcommittee UK 221.2 "Schutz gegen thermische Auswirkungen/Sachschutz" ("Protection against thermal effects/property protection") of the DKE (German Commission for Electrical, Electronic and Information Technologies) at DIN and VDE.
