In order to make the weight limits for firefighting vehicles fit for the future and to allow scope for design with regard to weight reserves, the requirements for the respective permissible total laden masses are omitted from the individual vehicle type standards. For this purpose a refined mass class subdivision compared to DIN EN 1846-1 is included in this newly issued DIN Specification DIN SPEC 14502-1 (pre-standard) (the predecessor edition DIN 14502-1:2000-12 was withdrawn in April 2006). This means that the standardized fire fighting vehicles are assigned to the refined subclasses in this DIN SPEC 14502-1 and that only the mass classes according to DIN EN 1846-1 and a reference to this DIN SPEC 14502-1 are inserted in the respective vehicle type standards. This eliminates the need for ongoing weight adjustments in the respective vehicle type standards. The system of mass classes throughout Europe will thus be continued unchanged, but more finely subdivided and included in the familiar DIN-FNFW fire-fighting vehicle type list as a weight specification for an overall overview. This classification will be reviewed at regular intervals. A DIN SPEC based on the pre-standardization procedure is the result of standardization work that has not yet been published as a standard by DIN because of certain reservations about the content or because the procedure for drawing it up differs from that of a standard. No draft of the present DIN SPEC has been published. This DIN Specification (DIN SPEC) has been prepared by Working Committee NA 031-04-06 AA "Allgemeine Anforderungen an Feuerwehrfahrzeuge - Löschfahrzeuge - SpA zu CEN/TC 192/WG 3" ("General requirements for fire service vehicles - Fire fighting vehicles - Mirror Committee of CEN/TC 192/WG 3") of DIN Standards Committee Firefighting and Fire Protection (FNFW).
