This European Technical Specification specifies four test methods for determining the fire performance of roofs to external fire exposure. The four methods assess the fire performance of roofs under the following conditions: - Test method 1: Under attack with burning brands; - Test method 2: Under attack with burning brands and wind; - Test method 3: Under attack with burning brands, wind and supplementary radiant heat; - Test method 4: Two stage method incorporating burning brands, wind and supplementary radiant heat. The test methods assess the fire spread across the surface of the roof, the fire spread within the roof construction (Test methods 1, 2 and 3), the fire penetration through the roof (Test methods 1, 3 and 4) and the occurrence of burning droplets or burning particles, either falling from the underside of the roof or from the exposed surface of the roof (Test methods 1, 3 and 4). Test methods 2 and 3 are not suitable for the assessment of geometrically irregular roofs or roof mounted systems, e.g. ventilators and dome lights. Regarding the four tests indicated no hierarchy is given. Every test method is regarded as an independent method; it is not expected to replace or substitute another test method. In Germany test method 1 is used in the course of the verifications of applicability provided for the construction supervising authority. This Technical Specification has been prepared by CEN/TC 127 "Fire safety in buildings". At DIN the Working Committee responsible for this standard is NA 005-52-07 AA "Brandverhalten von Baustoffen und Bauteilen - Bedachungen" ("Fire behaviour of building materials and building components - Roofing") of NABau.
