Overview

Every vessel exhibits a particular electromagnetic signature. For metal ships (as a rule) it is dependent on the materials from which the ship's hull primarily consists (ferromagnetic hull) and additionally on the materials and the electromagnetic characteristics of the equipment which is being carried along or is installed (products and installations). Information about the signature-relevant electromagnetic characteristics of an object can be obtained by its magnetic ranging. After ranging they are documented in the certificate "Magnetic item ranging (MVT)" according to VG 95577. The certificate contains the measured values of the magnetic flow density, information about a potentially carried out magnetic treatment as well as requirements on whether and, if applicable, how the object shall be marked. When the object is required to be marked, marking shall be performed in accordance with this standard (VG 95576). The standard specifies the respective marking means required (signs or symbols) and requirements which shall be applied for the marking means. This standard has been prepared by the Shipbuilding and Marine Technology Standards Committee (NSMT) at DIN, Working Committee NA 132-03-15 AA "Magnetik" ("Magnetic item ranging").
