Overview

The VG standard documents dee shackles made of non-magnetizable steel which are primarily used on vessels. Shackles according to this standard shall not be used as loading, sling or fasting chains as specified in DIN 15003:1970-02 "Lifting appliances, load suspending devices, loads and forces, definitions". The document specifies the designation, dimensions, masses, materials as well as the requirements and designs by indicating the mechanical properties for dee shackles made of non-magnetizable steel with nominal sizes of 0,16 to 10 and the Types A and B. The manufacturer shall verify tests with associated certificates and markings as part of the measures in quality assurance; a "3.2" inspection certificate according to DIN EN 10204 on the load test and magnetic measurement shall be issued by a recognized classification society. Annex A (informative) gives main dimensions based on equations derived from trials on shackles. The trials were initiated by Germanischer Lloyd (GL) in 1953/1954 at the Bundesanstalt für Materialprüfung (Federal Institute for Materials Testing) in Berlin.
