This standard revises and replaces the previous standard DIN VDE 0228-2 (VDE 0228-2):1987-12 and adapts its specifications to the current state of the art. In this process, the previous VDE classification VDE 0228 has also been changed to VDE 0845 in the framework of the re-structuring and compilation of the DIN/VDE body of standards with respect to topics of protection against overvoltage and influence of telecommunication systems. The standard contains specifications concerning the protection of telecommunications systems and installations (protection of persons and of objects) against influences caused by common mode (longitudinal) and differential mode (transverse) voltages and/or currents induced by three-phase a.c. systems via inductive, capacitive or conductive coupling. There, the standard builds on the standard DIN VDE 0845-6-1 (VDE 0845-6-1) which describes or specifies the principles, the corresponding measurement and calculation methods and the limit values and supplements the specific specifications regarding the protection against influences due to voltages induced by three-phase a.c. systems. Therefore, it is sufficient to address the specific issues and features of three-phase a.c. grids only and otherwise make references to the corresponding clauses of DIN VDE 0845-6-1 (VDE 0845-6-1). However, the table indicating the limit values for hazards to persons and damages to objects due to inductive and conductive coupling is repeated (from DIN VDE 0845-6-1 (VDE 0845-6-1)) because of its particular importance. This standard no longer covers overhead telecommunication lines, since apart from the Deutsche Bahn (German railway) they are not used in Germany anymore. The annexes give information on the ability to extinguish fires due to earth faults. The responsible committee is DKE/UK 767.6 "Schutz von Einrichtungen der Informationstechnik gegen Überspannungen und niederfrequente Felder" ("Protection of equipment for information technology against overvoltage and low-frequency fields") of the DKE (German Commission for Electrical, Electronic and Information Technologies) at DIN and VDE.
This document replaces DIN VDE 0228-2:1987-12; VDE 0228-2:1987-12 .
