This document essentially contains requirements for the selection and installation of surge protective devices (SPDs) for protection against transient overvoltages due to atmospheric discharges. In addition to the adaptation of references and terminology, the standard differs from DIN VDE 0100-534 (VDE 0100-534):2009-02 as follows: a) Criteria for the selection of the test class (type) of surge protective devices (SPDs) have been reformulated. b) The requirements for protection against overvoltages have been newly described. A distinction is made between protection in the event of common-mode interference and opposed-mode interference. c) The connection diagrams CT 1 and CT 2 corresponding to the systems by type of ground connection have been redesignated. d) The selection of overvoltage protective devices (SPDs) with regard to the designated protection level Up in accordance with the rated impulse voltage of the equipment to be protected has been redefined. e) Selection criteria of overvoltage protective devices (SPDs) with regard to temporary overvoltages (TOVs) are no longer included. These requirements are now covered in a binding manner in the product standard for surge protective devices (SPDs). f) The specifications regarding the minimum discharge capacity of surge protective devices (SPDs) have been revised. g) The requirements for the protection of surge protective devices (SPDs) in the event of overcurrent have been newly formulated. h) Sections on the selectivity between overcurrent protective devices and on the surge current strength of upstream installation devices have been newly included. i) New requirements for the connection of overvoltage protective devices (SPDs) to the low-voltage installation are included. j) Inclusion of a new clause with specifications on the effective protective range of overvoltage protective devices (SPDs) (= distance between overvoltage protective device (SPD) and equipment to be protected). k) New specifications on the necessary cross-section of the connecting cables of surge protective devices (SPDs) have been included. l) Informative exemplary illustrations of standard installations of surge protective devices (SPDs) according to the systems of the type of earth connection have been revised and expanded. The responsible committee is DKE/UK 221.2 "Schutz gegen thermische Auswirkungen/Sachschutz" ("Protection against thermal effects/property protection") of the DKE (German Commission for Electrical, Electronic and Information Technologies) at DIN and VDE.
