This standard contains the German version of International Standard ISO 8486-2 which has been prepared by ISO/TC 29/SC 5 "Grinding wheels and abrasives" in Working Group 7 "Grain characteristics". The responsible German mirror committee is Working Committee NA 121-04-06 AA "Körnungen" ("Grain characteristics") at FWS. This Part 2 of the DIN ISO 8486 standard series, which consists of two parts, standardizes methods for the determination and checking of microgrits F230 to F2000 in fused aluminium oxide and silicon carbide. Microgrits designate the particle size range of mean grain sizes of 60 µm or less. In contrast, Part 1 of the standard series standardizes the corresponding specifications for macrogrits F4 to F220. The standard specifies the grit designation (F230, F240, ...) for the testing of those grits used in the manufacture of bonded abrasive products and general industrial applications. It also applies to abrasives removed from bonded products and loose grits used in polishing. This new edition has become necessary to expand the range of microgrits to F2000 and also to add X-ray test methods and the electrical resistance test method. The standard describes criteria for the grain size distribution of the microgrits F230 to F2000. The F series is a graduated series of thirteen microgrits following on from the finest grain of the microgrits (F220). The focus is on the specification of requirements for various test methods for determination of grain size, subdivided into methods based on Micro-F-Mastergrids and methods carried out using US sedimentation tube. Furthermore, requirements for the standard designation of microgrits in fused aluminium oxide or silicon carbide which meet the requirements of this standard as well as the marking of its packagings are specified. The standard contains amongst others three informative annexes, a form for recording results of sedimentation analysis using US sedimentation tube and an example of representation of test data for grain size distribution of fused aluminium oxide.
