The standard DIN ISO 513 specifies the classification and application of hard cutting materials, including hard metals (carbides), ceramics, diamond and boron nitride, for machining by chip removal, and establishes their application. It is not applicable to other uses (mining and other percussion tools, wire drawing dies, tools operating by deformation of the metal and comparator contact tips and similar). The International Standard ISO 513:2012 has been prepared by ISO/TC 29/SC 9 "Tools with cutting edges made of hard cutting materials" in collaboration with German experts of DIN Standards Committee Tools and Clamping Devices (FWS) at Working Committee NA 121-01-12 AA "Dreh-und Bohrwerkzeuge mit Wendeschneidplatten aus harten Schneidstoffen" ("Turning- and drilling tools with indexable inserts made of hard cutting materials").
