The International Standard ISO 4309:2010, "Cranes - Wire ropes - Care and maintenance, inspection and discard", Edition 4 has been prepared by Technical Committee ISO/TC 96 "Cranes", Subcommittee SC 3 "Selection of wire ropes". This translation and the corresponding adoption into the German body of standards has been decided by Steering Committee CEN/TC 147 - ISO/TC 96 Cranes (NA 060-22-10 AA) and has been supervised by Working Committee NA 060-22-15-03 AK "Seile" ("Ropes") of Technical Section Cranes and Hoists at the Mechanical Engineering Standards Committee and in collaboration with the Drahtseilvereinigung e. V. (German wire rope trade association). The committee and Drahtseilvereinigung e. V. thereby document compliance with the ISO standard. The decision of Steering Committee NA 060-22-10 AA "CEN/TC 147 - ISO/TC 96 - Cranes" to publish a German version of the ISO Standard is deemed to provide be a helpful document for manufacturers, expert appraisers, crane operators and others involved to support those parties responsible for the "care and maintenance" as well as those responsible for "inspection and discard". Wire ropes on cranes are regarded as expendable components, requiring replacement when rope inspection indicates that their condition has diminished to the point where further use would be unwise from a safety standpoint. The first edition is a translation of the 4th edition of ISO 4309 published in 2010 and fills a gap in the German body of standards. The national interests during preparation were represented by Steering Committee NA 060-22-10 AA "CEN/TC 147-ISO/TC 96 - Krane" ("CEN/TC 147-ISO/TC 96 - Cranes") of Technical Section Cranes and Hoists at the Mechanical Engineering Standards Committee (NAM) at DIN, the German Institute for Standardization e. V.
