Overview

The standard DIN ISO 20816-1 is the editorial revision and summary of DIN ISO 7919-1:1997-08, DIN ISO 10816-1:1997-08 and DIN ISO 10816-1/A1:2010-06. It is a basic standard and establishes general conditions and procedures for the measurement and evaluation of vibration using measurements made on rotating, non-rotating and non-reciprocating parts of complete machines. It is applicable to measurements of both absolute and relative radial shaft vibration with regard to the monitoring of radial clearances, but excludes axial shaft vibration. Torsional vibrations are also not dealt with in this standard. The general evaluation criteria, which are presented in terms of both vibration magnitude and change of vibration, relate to both operational monitoring and acceptance testing. Three basic vibration parameters are defined (vibration displacement, vibration velocity and vibration acceleration) and their limits are specified. In addition, instructions are given on how to set limit values for operation. Recommendations for measurement and evaluation criteria for special types of machinery will be provided in future parts of ISO 20816. However, guide values are given for assessing the vibrations of non-rotating components of such machines for which no specific international standard exists. The evaluation criteria relate only to the vibration produced by the machine itself and not the vibration transmitted to it from outside. The International Standard ISO 20816-1:2016 has been prepared by Technical Committee ISO/TC 108 "Mechanical vibration, shock and condition monitoring", Subcommittee SC 2 "Measurement and evaluation of mechanical vibration and shock as applied to machines, vehicles and structures", the secretariat of which is held by DIN, under German leadership of this project. German cooperation was provided by the Committee NA 001-03-03 UA (NALS/VDI C 3) "Messung und Beurteilung von Maschinenschwingungen" ("Measurement and evaluation of vibration of machines") atDIN/VDI Standards Committee Acoustics, Noise Control and Vibration Engineering (NALS).
