This Technical Report provides guidance and recommendations regarding the availability and use of radiation sources that are needed when testing and evaluating instruments used for the detection of illicit trafficking of radioactive material. It includes the use of surrogate or replacement sources that are easier to obtain than those defined as standard sources. The purpose of the report is to provide guidance to instrument manufacturers, users, and testers, as well as recommendations regarding the selection and potential use of radiation sources, surrogate sources, and source simulation tools. The responsible committee is DKE/GUK 967.2 "Aktivitätsmessgeräte für den Strahlenschutz" ("Activity measuring instruments for radiation protection") of the DKE (German Commission for Electrical, Electronic and Information Technologies) at DIN and VDE.
