This standard contains the explosion protection requirements for the construction and labeling of devices and components for use in underground mines that may be endangered by methane and/or combustible dusts. It also covers machines and systems that are formed by combining separately assessed devices and components that are offered on the market by individual manufacturers (assemblies). The standard also addresses the avoidance of ignitions of explosive atmospheres caused by fires (or smouldering fires) of combustible materials required in the construction. The standard covers non-electrical and electrical requirements for a wide range of machines used underground, such as shearer loaders, planers, heading machines, rope-operated systems, fans, diesel engines, compressors and drilling equipment. The need for the standard arises out of the significant operational differences between underground activities and those of other industries that work with or in potentially explosive atmospheres. The provisions of this standard provide a means of conforming to Essential Requirements of the New Approach Directive 2014/34/EU. The International Standard has been prepared by Technical Committee IEC/TC 31 "Equipment for explosive atmospheres" in collaboration with Technical Committee CEN/TC 305 "Potentially explosive atmospheres - Explosion prevention and protection", the secretariat of which is held by DIN. The responsible German standardization committee is Working Committee NA 095-02-10 AA "Explosionsschutz im Bergbau und an Verbrennungsmotoren" ("Explosion prevention and protection in mining and on combustion engines") at NASG.
