The incorporation of the series of International Standards ISO/IEC 19788 into the European body of standards is intended to promulgate the use of common European Standards for the description of metadata for learning resources rather than differing national standards. Adopting the International Standard into the European body of standards ensures an improved coordination throughout Europe of learning opportunities and learning resources. The series of International Standards ISO/IEC 19788 specifies sets of metadata elements and their attributes for the description of learning resources. This also includes the specification of the rules governing the identification of these data elements and attributes. These metadata elements, summarized in datasets, then form the description of a metadata learning resource, that is the "metadata learning resource (MLR) record". ISO/IEC 19788-1 specifies, using the framework specified in ISO/IEC 19788-5, educational aspects of learning resources across various educational, cultural and linguistic settings. ISO/IEC 19788-5:2012 has been prepared by Subcommittee JTC 1/SC 36 "Learning Technologies" of Joint Committee ISO/IEC JTC 1 "Information Technology" and has been adopted as EN ISO/IEC 19788-5 by Technical Committee CEN/TC 353 "Information and Communication Technologies for Learning, Education and Training", the secretariat of which is held by UNI (Italy). The responsible body is the DIN Standards Committee Information Technology and selected IT Applications (NIA). Currently, there is no national mirror committee to JTC 1/SC 36 or CEN/TC 253, the corresponding work attended is by a rapporteur.
