DIN EN ISO/IEC 19788-3:2014-03

DIN EN ISO/IEC 19788-3 is part of the standard series DIN EN ISO/IEC 19788. Adopting the International Standard series ISO/IEC 19788 series as European Standards ensures that common European Standards on metadata for learning resources will be used rather than differing national standards. Adopting the International Standard as a European Standard ensures an improved coordination throughout Europe of learning opportunities and learning resources. The ISO/IEC 19788 series of International Standards specifies sets of metadata elements and their attributes for the description of learning resources. This includes the rules governing the identification of data elements and the specification of their attributes. These metadata elements are then formed into sets, thus describing a learning resource, for example in the form of a metadata learning resource (MLR) record. ISO/IEC 19788-2 provides a basic set of metadata elements for description of learning resources taken from the number of metadata elements described in ISO 15836:2009 Dublin core, taking into account the framework provided in ISO/IEC 19788-1. ISO/IEC 19788-3 is designed to help implementers with a starting point for adopting ISO/IEC 19788, defining an application profile that specifies, through adding constraints to options and value ranges for the use of some data elements, how the ISO/IEC 19788-2 element set can be used. ISO/IEC 19788-3:2011 has been prepared by Joint Technical Committee ISO/IEC JTC 1 "Information technology", Subcommittee JTC 1/SC 36 "Learning Technologies" and has been adopted as EN ISO/IEC 19788-5 by Technical Committee CEN/TC 353 "Information and Communication Technologies for Learning, Education and Training", the secretariat of which is held by UNI (Italy). The responsible committee at DIN is the Information Technology and selected IT Applications Standards Committee (NIA). Currently there is no national mirror committee to JTC 1/SC 36 or CEN/TC 353, the corresponding work is attended by a rapporteur.
